I Stand With What I Said About The Lakers

I said some bold things after the Lakers took a 2-0 series lead, and although they lost Game 3 against the Heat, I stand with what I said about the Lakers and this series.

I said that the Lakers would sweep the NBA Finals and it would be pretty easy. I was wrong. Although the Heat won Game 3, I still don’t believe that this will become a very competitive series. Here’s why.

I think that the Lakers lost their focus because of the way that they were playing. They dominated both Game 1 and Game 2 and they were just two games away from a title. Although it seemed impossible that the Lakers with a god-mode AD and Lebron would lose focus, it happened for one reason or another.

But I think that with that loss, the Lakers will re-coup and re-focus in turn. I don’t expect a Game 3 performance going forward in this series and this series should be over in 5 games.

And although you can say that the Lakers fell apart, which they did, they remained competitive in a game in which Anthony Davis struggled. AD played his worst Finals game yet, mainly because of foul trouble in the first half. I think that if AD stays in the game longer, the Lakers win this game because nobody on the Heat can guard AD.

But a thing that the Lakers need to improve upon more than anything is defense. They can’t allow the Heat’s offense to continue to play well, otherwise this series will be closer than it should be. Lebron James will need to do a better job on Jimmy Butler as he has been great in this series.

Danny Green, Rondo, KCP, and Caruso need to play much better against the Heats guards. They’ve been getting cooked without Goran Dragic even playing. They can’t give Duncan Robinson any good looks, and while Tyler Herro hasn’t been shooting the ball great, they need to play him much tougher.

If the Heat get Bam Adebayo back for Game 4, then the Lakers definitely missed their chance to effectively end the series. But I don’t think that the Heat can keep this up, and I think the Lakers will lock in and end this series sooner rather than later.

Another thing that the Lakers have to be disappointed on is late-game execution. Markieff Morris was their only source of offense in the 4th, which is unacceptable with two top-7 players on the floor. AD didn’t have it going in Game 3, so Lebron has to look to score, not differ. I thought that the Lakers had already figured this out, but it turns you they haven’t fully yet.
