The Difference Between MJ and Lebron

The end of Game 5 showed us the difference between Lebron and MJ. While both of their styles have worked for both of their careers, I’m talking about the difference between MJ and Lebron’s mentality.

(Note: I’m not blaming anybody for what happened in Game 5. I’m just comparing the two styles of some of the all-time greats, and how Lebron can benefit from MJ’s style).

Now we all know the difference between MJ and Lebron. We talk about their differences all the time, arguing for hours, never coming to a conclusion. But I think we can all agree that there is a difference in styles between MJ and Lebron. MJ was a bully, as he expected perfection from all his teammates. While this was very, very harsh, he has 6 rings on his fingers because of it. Lebron has a much more relaxed approach, and that has netted him 3 rings. Both styles have shown to be successful, but today I’m talking about why MJ’s style could benefit Lebron.

Throughout these NBA Finals, Lebron has been going off. But Game 3 was very easily his worst ending to a game. He scored just 2 points in the last 9 minutes of the 4th, and the Lakers lost because he struggled. And we saw similar things in Game 5.

Lebron had been going off all game, and he had the ball down one with a chance to win. And instead of the best player in this series taking the shot, he passed it. And while MJ also passed it, I think it was Lebron’s shot to shoot. He earned it as the best player. Even if he missed, I would have lived with the results. Instead he passed to an ice cold Danny Green, who missed badly.

The ball gets rebounded by Markieff Morris, who threw it away, ending the game. But that possession showed the difference between Lebron and MJ. While MJ had passed the ball to his teammates in big moments, he knew when it was his time, his time to shoot. Nevermind if he misses it or he made it, he was going to shoot it. And Lebron hasn’t done that for his career. He’s a willing passer, and sometimes it pays up, but it usually doesn’t.

I think that if Lebron got some of this killer mentality, it would do him some good. And while Lebron haters should say he should pass, I disagree. I think in that situation, it’s Lebron, AD or the highway for the Lakers.

With Game 6 being tomorrow, the game will likely again be close late in the game. So it’ll be interesting to see how Lebron and the Lakers handle the pressure late. Because so far in this series, they haven’t been great. It’ll be up to Lebron to win this Finals for the Lakers.

  1. I think Bron has killer mentality, otherwise he’d never have won the rings he has. But I think to him basketball is NOT everything. He is into movies, social justice issues etc. so basketball may be the means to a higher end. MJ was a basketball killer and parlayed it into Nike business brand later.
