What Should The T-Wolves Do With The #1 Overall Pick?

The Minnesota Timberwolves had a 14% chance to get the #1 overall pick in the draft, and they got that #1 pick. This pick could be huge for the Timberwolves and their progression to become a playoff team. But with rumors that the T-Wolves might trade the #1 overall pick, what should they do with the #1 overall pick?

The Timberwolves aren’t exactly a model franchise. Their history isn’t deep and their playoff success is limited. They have had a couple of really great players, those two being Kevin Love and Kevin Garnett. Both were drafted by the T-Wolves, but both did better things after leaving Minnesota. The Timberwolves have a couple of talented players like Karl Anthony-Towns and D’Angelo Russell on the roster right now, but they haven’t done much with their career, especially KAT.

The Timberwolves have been rumored to trade the #1 overall pick because they are scared to make a bad decision, or mess up. Here are some of the worst draft selections by the T-Wolves.
2019: Jarrett Culver (6th overall)
2016: Kris Dunn (5th overall, traded after rookie year)
2011: Derrick Williams (2nd overall)

So, the T-Wolves have a right to be scared of messing up the pick. But here’s where that decision is stupid. If you’re scared of failing in NBA, then you shouldn’t be a GM. Rarely do moves go perfectly, and there are always things you wish you could have done. But that’s not a good way to GM. And with the 2020 Draft being pretty weak, I doubt that the T-Wolves could get anything great for the pick. Trading down wouldn’t accomplish much as with the #1 pick, you could essentially take who you want. So we’ve eliminated the T-Wolves trading the pick, so who should they select?

They have D-LO and KAT, giving them a nice offensive duo. But this doesn’t give them a great defense. So while James Wiseman is a decent shot-blocker, he doesn’t make sense for this team. You already have a franchise center and you don’t need another one. It would be like the Grizzlies selecting Hasheem Thabeet 2nd overall in 2009. They just selected him, even if they didn’t need him. Taking Wiseman wouldn’t be very smart (or wise).

Another option is Lamelo Ball. Ball is a very boom or bust prospect and with him apparently doing poorly in his team interviews, Ball might slip in the draft order. Ball hasn’t showed much signs of defense, and Lamelo doesn’t play well off ball. So drafting him for him just to be the 3rd scoring option doesn’t make sense. And a backcourt of Russell and Ball doesn’t bring any defense, meaning that 3/5 of your 5 positions have sub-par defense. Not a recipe for success in the future.

Deni Avdija is a position of need (SF), but he is very raw and unknown. He isn’t great at defense and will likely struggle early on in the NBA. He won’t be a good fit for the #1 pick, unless the T-Wolves trade down a few spots. But like we said earlier, trading the pick isn’t worth it. So that takes away Avdija.

I think that who you take with the #1 overall pick is very simple. It’s Anthony Edwards. Edwards was a great scorer in college, averaging 19 point and 5 rebounds. Ignore the efficiency as Edwards played on a very weak Georgia team. But his scoring ability from all 3 levels makes him a very intriguing prospect. Edwards has also shown potential to be a great defender. He is big and strong at 6-5, 225 lb. Edwards has long hands and averaged 1.3 steals per game. Edwards isn’t a true point guard, and can play either the SG or the SF, just what the Timberwolves need. He has a great build to guard people bigger than him and he is a great scorer to have off ball. If Edwards can become a great catch-and-shoot 3-point shooter, this will be a goldmine for the T-Wolves.

I don’t think that there is any debating who the T-Wolves should select with the #1 overall pick. Edwards fits what they need, some defense and a real SG. Edwards has shown great potential, and the Timberwolves would be making a mistake by not selecting him 1st overall in the draft.
