Do The Heat Really Need Giannis?

There have been rumors that the Heat are gunning for free agent Giannis Antetokounmpo in the summer of 2021. The Heat made the 2020 NBA Finals of course and they will be around as a contender for while. So do the Heat really need a superstar?

The Heat were obviously very successful with the roster that they currently have, losing the NBA Finals in 6 games. But the Heat have been rumored to be looking for guys like Victor Oladipo and mainly 2x MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. But do the Heat really need these guys?

My answer would be yes, because Giannis is very good and he would make any team that he joins better, but I don’t think that the Heat need to do this.

They have Jimmy Butler, a top-15 player in the league. Butler isn’t a great offensive player, but he is very good defensively and is a great leader for this team. I don’t consider Butler to be a superstar in the NBA, but I do consider him to be an All-Star. Bam Adebayo is an ascending big guy, Duncan Robinson is a great shooter, Tyler Herro is great offensively and has a great swagger about him, and Kendrick Nunn has shown potential to be a good scorer.

But the Heat aren’t at their max potential. I think that they could use some better big guys other than Bam because other than Bam they are pretty thin. But most of their roster is young with Nunn, Robinson, and Herro all playing a lot of minutes. I don’t think that the Heat have to go all in to succeed. They have a culture and they proved that they can win with said culture.

But with that said, the Heat really do need somebody like Giannis. Like I said, other than Bam, they don’t have much size. Bam is great at stopping Giannis and the Heat are good at game planning for the Greek Freak, but I think that having Giannis adds a lot on both ends. Giannis is a great help side defender and is able to cover a lot of ground. Giannis is also fast and agile and able to stay on the perimeter with most guards.

On offense, Giannis has some shot-creators such as Jimmy Butler and Tyler Herro. It’s different from the Bucks because Herro and Butler can create off the dribble. Duncan Robinson is constantly moving, and constantly shifting a defense so Giannis can power through the lane. Erik Spoelstra is a much better coach that Mike Budenholzer, and will be able to utilize Giannis much better.

So while I think that the Heat don’t need to go all in because they have proven that what they have works, Giannis does solve a lot of their problems. I think that there is one way to know if the Heat really want Giannis however.

Goran Dragic is an unrestricted free agent this summer, and depending on what the Heat do with Dragic will tell us if they really want Giannis. If they pursue Dragic, they will pay him in the $15-20 million dollar range as he averaged 16.2 points and 5.1 assists on 44% shooting this season. Even at the age of 34, Dragic is still a very useful piece on any team.

But if the Heat don’t decide to pay Dragic, I think that will tell us that they want to go after Giannis. Now we don’t know if Giannis signs that supermax this season, although I recommend that Giannis doesn’t sign it because I doubt that the Bucks can win a title with their current roster. But if the Heat don’t sign Dragic, that tells me that they really want Giannis on their team.

So this situation with the Heat and Giannis is very unique. The Heat have young talent and have found success already. They don’t necessarily need Giannis, although Giannis would greatly help this team. But I think we can tell pretty early on if the Heat really want Giannis. If they re-sign the talented veteran Goran Dragic, they might got off of the Giannis trail. If they let him go, Giannis to South Beach could be happening. We will just have to wait and see what happens this offseason and the next to see if the Greek Freak switches teams.
