Every Team’s New Year Resolution

Happy New Year, everybody! With everybody celebrating the New Year, I thought it would be fun to do something special to break in 2022. New Year’s resolutions are a tradition around the world. The idea behind it is to set a (somewhat) realistic goal for yourself in the upcoming year.

Resolutions range from health to productivity, most of them being forgotten just weeks after being made. It’s my job to find every team a resolution they can stick to in 2022. Let’s do this.

Rules

  • Every team gets just one resolution
  • Resolution will not be far-fetched, something achievable
  • I will make the resolution sound rationable/doabale in some way, shape, or form
  • I am basing this on the fact that these teams will at least try to follow through on these resolutions

Atlanta Hawks

Finish With A Top-15 Defense By The End of the Year

The Atlanta Hawks are struggling to be consistent. Even with a high-powered offense, their 25th ranked defense is their main issue. I have often praised the Hawks for their immense depth and versatility, but clearly, they need some help defensively.

Here are the areas the Hawks need to improve on defensively to find some answers on that end;

  • Not forcing turnovers
  • Better paint defense

The Hawks rank last in forcing turnovers. Opposing teams average just 11.9 turnovers per game when they play the Hawks. The Hawks are 29th in fastbreak points because of this. Forcing more turnovers would lead to more easy opportunities.

But the paint defense is the more vital one for the Hawks. The Hawks aren’t a terrible paint defense, but improvement would be welcome. Teams make a lot of shots in the restricted area against the Hawks (6th in opponent RA FGM). How can they fix that? Let’s look at the last time the Hawks were somewhat healthy – December 17th against Denver.

KevinHuerternotfound.exe

What the hell was that, Kevin? Clint Capela was too worried about Jokic to stop that drive. Will Barton got to the rim with no resistance at all. Not good.

rotationsnotfound.exe

Scramble defense is more vital than ever with the amount of drive and kicks in the NBA. In my opinion, Trae Young should have run out to Jeff Green earlier. As soon as Gordon got the ball in the corner, he should have taken that away.

Huerter would rotate to Monte Morris, who is nearly 35 feet away from the basket. Instead, Young just kind of stands there, watching Huerter do too much, and Jeff Green makes the shot.

There’s a reason the Hawks are three games under 0.500. They need to find a rhythm on defense, or else.

Boston Celtics

Get More Kick On Offense

The Celtics offense has been sporadic this season. Despite their two All-Stars, they are the 20th ranked offense in the NBA. The Celtics are good at certain things, but they need to improve if they want to make the playoffs. Here’s how they can do that.

The Celtics are the __ fastest team in the NBA. Their half-court offense isn’t working. Here’s how the Celtics need to change for the betterment of their team.

  • Play faster
  • Stop settling
  • Getting to the rim more

Playing faster leads to a lot of things on offense. The Celtics are the 9th ranked defense, forcing a decent amount of turnovers. However, Boston is near the bottom of fastbreak points, leading to fewer opportunities against a non-set defense. Faster=better.

The Celtics are 8th in drives to the basket. Yet, they are 18th in points in the paint. That doesn’t make sense until you look at their mid-range shooting numbers;

Celtics Mid-Range Shooting In 2022Ranks
12.8 attempts 12th
39.8 FG%19th

Shooting less mid-range shots would help the Celtics greatly. Converting those shot attempts to layups & 3-pointers would help make the offense less clunky. Shooting mid-range shots is only good when defenses give that up. Shooting mid-range shots for the sake of shooting them is redundant.

The Celtics’ talent level isn’t great, but they can become a better offense. Slightly changing their philosophy would help them get better in the long term.

Brooklyn Nets

A Smooth Transition With Kyrie Irving

Unlike the first two resolutions, I don’t have numbers to back this up. Chemistry is perhaps the most important thing in basketball, yet we can’t quantify it. As NBA fans, we hardly see how good a team’s chemistry is behind the scenes.

Kyrie Irving is only going to be playing on the road this season. His chemistry with the Big 3 is not a problem, but the chemistry with everyone else will be weird. Role-players will struggle with this move. Having to learn two completely different roles isn’t easy.

Harden and Durant will have to change their playstyles on a dime, something that might affect Harden.

Irving’s talent is undeniable. He’s one of the greatest offensive players ever. But there’s no way of knowing how successful this move will become. Time will tell how the weirdest player-team relationship ever will turn out.

Charlotte Hornets

A New Defense

I don’t know if the Hornets can realistically fix their defense. Their run-and-gun style makes for an exciting offense. But there’s a reason the Hornets are one of the worst defensive teams in the league;

  • 113.4 Defensive Rating (28th)
  • 46.7% Opp FG (26th)
  • 14.3 Opp 3-PTM (30th)
  • 35.8% Opp 3-PT (22nd)
  • 21.9 Opp FTA (25th)
  • 11.4 Opp OREB (28th)
  • 15.9 Opp 2nd Chance PTS (30th)

Similar to Rome, it will take more than a day to build this defense. Charlotte’s management will have a busy offseason, trying to fix this glaring issue. Some names who could help the Hornets;

  1. Myles Turner
  2. Myles Turner
  3. Myles Turner

There might be a riddle in the players I just listed. Let’s see if the Hornets can solve it.

Chicago Bulls

More Forward Depth

Chicago is currently on Could-9. Everything they dreamed of after a busy offseason has come to fruition. The new additions have fit in seamlessly. The Bulls are the #1 seed in the East entering the new year. The one problem they have is frontcourt depth.

Already thin down low, an injury to Patrick Williams has left the Bulls scrambling to find good minutes. Guys like Derrick Jones Jr, Tony Bradley, and Troy Brown Jr. have been fine in their steads. But, let me pose a question to the masses.

Are those four guys trustable in the playoffs? Not to be mean or anything, but I’m leaning towards no. In that case, the Bulls’ already aggressive management will have to make a move. Here are some potential trade candidates for Chicago.

  • Kyle Anderson (MEM) – Two-way forward who can act as a secondary creator / Warning: Plays in Slow-Motion
  • Thaddeus Young (SAS) – Two-way forward who works well out of the posts / knows the Bulls’ system
  • Jerami Grant (DET) – This would give the Bulls a reliable scorer off the bench. Warning: Talent Overload

Do you know what’s so frustrating about what I just said? The Bulls are the #1 seed in the East even with their thin frontcourt. Patrick Williams returning would ease this problem. The Bulls might just keep what they have and wait for reinforcements.

Interesting to see what Artūras Karnišovas does in the coming weeks regarding this “dilemma”.

Cleveland Cavaliers

More Creators on Offense

The Cleveland Cavaliers are the surprise team of this season. Thanks to their elite defense, the playoffs aren’t far away. The Cavs are a team of pieces, not a great collective. They need so much more depth to be successful. Look at their bench for Pete’s sake;

  • Dean Wade
  • Cedi Osman
  • Dylan Windler
  • Denzel Valentine (now traded)
  • Kevin Pagnos

The bench needs a lot of work. Kevin Love & Ricky Rubio are the only things that work off the bench, both enjoying fantastic seasons. They need to stay healthy, otherw-

Well then. The Cavs lost their only backup ball-handler, leaving them even thinner off the bench. Trading for another veteran like Rajon Rondo is helpful, but the Cavs need more help. Their lack of offensive creators is frightening.

Cleveland relies so heavily on Darius Garland for offense. Now with Ricky Rubio gone, the offense will most certainly get worse. The Cavs are having a surprise season. If they want to maintain this momentum for the future, they must rebuild their second unit.

Dallas Mavericks

More Help For Luka Doncic (Still)

I don’t need to spell this out for anybody. The Mavericks still haven’t built Luka Doncic a competitive team. The offense has gotten significantly worse with Jason Kidd at the helm. Even with Doncic, the Mavs won’t sniff a deep playoff run with this roster.

Kristaps Porzingis has been better this season, but I can’t say if he’s the answer. Tim Hardaway Jr has been awful this season after signing a big contract. Jalen Brunson is perhaps the most reliable option on this team, which is sad.

Dallas features too many non-creators who consistently get minutes. Guys like Dorian Finney-Smith, Dwight Powell, Maxi Kleber, and Reggie Bullock aren’t creators. Dallas has yet to make some sort of trade, content with being good, not great.

The Mavericks have already done the hard part of getting Doncic to stay. It’s time for them to start getting aggressive in an attempt to win a title.

Denver Nuggets

More Role Player Production

With Jamal Murray and MPJ out, role players will dictate Denver’s success once more. The offense was sluggish to start the season, but the role players have been playing well as of late.

Guys like Monte Morris, Aaron Gordon, and Jeff Green were very productive in December. They need continued scoring around Jokic to stay afloat in the Western Conference.

If I’m Denver, I need more offense from the end of the bench. That could come from JaMychal Green, Austin Rivers, or rookie Bones Hyland. If Denver wants to win games, they need to find scoring that’s not from Jokic.

I don’t know how Denver isn’t dead yet. They remain in striking distance despite every obstacle imaginable being thrown at them. Until the All-Stars return, the others for Denver will be the driving force.

Detroit Pistons

More Cade Cunningham Isolations

The Detroit Pistons are beyond bad. In their last 19 games, they’ve won just once. Their inexperienced lineup has been mostly disappointing this season. Guys like Saddiq Bey and Killian Hayes aren’t producing great results. The one good thing about the Pistons has been #1 overall pick, Cade Cunningham.

Despite the losing, Cunningham has been superb. His poise and control on offense are showing. Detroit has been feeding him the ball, the results showing for themselves. My one request? Could we see more isolations from Cade?

He’s a great ball-handler and downhill driver already. With his size, he’s like a tank when he gets into the lane. Most of his offense comes off the catch or in the pick-and-roll. That’s fine, but some more isolations would be fun.

Cunningham is averaging just 2.3 isolations per game. He only scores 38% of the time, but I don’t care. The Pistons aren’t good. More Cade isolations won’t make them any worse than they already are.

Was this awkward? Yes. What this fun? Also yes.

Golden State Warriors

Letting Klay Thompson Relax

The Warriors are the best team in basketball. Now with veterans instead of teenagers coming off the bench, they have taken off. They are the best defensive team in the league, the offense not lagging too far behind. They are deep, talented, and the current favorites to win the title.

Klay Thompson hasn’t played in an NBA game in two years. Do the Warriors need him? No. But, if he returns, he’s more fuel to a raging bonfire. Now, I think it’s time we set something straight. Not only do we not know what type of Klay we’re going to see, we can’t expect anything from him. Draymond Green hit things right on the head a few weeks ago;

“One thing I know about being hurt … you start to feel the anticipation of everyone around you in the circle when that starts to mount up, and the reality is that I don’t think he should feel that. He may not be ready mentally, right? His body can be great but is he ready tomorrow mentally? He could not be. So I don’t want him to feel that anxiety and that pressure that I know comes with it when everybody’s looking like, “Oh man, he about to be back. Hey Klay, you back?’So, no, I’m not anticipating it all but I am very excited about it. When they set a date, I’ll anticipate that date. Until then, I try to keep my hopes very even-keeled.”

Draymond Green in an interview a few weeks ago

What Draymond said is true. Expecting All-Star and All-Defense Klay Thompson is unrealistic. We don’t know what Klay we’re going to see. The Warriors don’t need Klay, but if he’s great? They’ll welcome him with open arms.

The most important thing is to not get on Klay’s case. Coming back from just one of the injuries he had is tough. But coming off of back-to-back season-ending injuries? That’s unheard of, but he’s trying to do it. At worst, he’ll still give us great boat pictures on Instagram.

Houston Rockets

More Consistency From Jalen Green

Jalen Green has had a weird rookie season. He struggled immensely to start the season, missing the shots he hit consistently in the G-League. An injury kept him out for weeks, with the Rockets winning seven straight games at one point without him.

Since returning, Green has shown a lot more promise. He’s shooting 49% in his last three games, hitting the tough shots he was missing to start the season. I compare Green a lot to Anthony Edwards. The talent is there, but the shot selection holds him back.

These last three games for Green have been better, but it’s time to do that for the entire season. I would love to see him get to the basket more, using that insane athleticism of his to blow by the initial defender.

Green’s newfound confidence should bode well over the coming months. Taking smarter shots & attacking the rim more is all I ask. And maybe less cockiness. That always helps.

Indiana Pacers

Blow Everything Up

The Indiana Pacers aren’t good. Last night, DeMar DeRozan broke the hearts of Pacers fans at the buzzer. Close losses have summed the season for the Pacers. Even with their decent talent levels, they find ways to lose games. It’s shaping up to be a season like 2021, where the playoffs seem distant.

Indiana hasn’t been a real team in the East in nearly a decade. Again, they are a team that has good pieces, but the results aren’t there. That’s why it’s time to blow things up. The Pacers haven’t rebuilt in a long time, so it will be a good thing for them to do so.

Sabonis, Turner, and Levert headline Indiana’s most valuable pieces. Malcolm Brogdon would be another trade piece, but he’s ineligible to be traded this season.

The Pacers need to rebuild. Chris Duarte and Isaiah Jackson are building blocks for the future. Continuing to be mediocre is pointless. This is something they should’ve done a long time ago, but better late than never.

Los Angeles Clippers

WAY More Offense

The Los Angeles Clippers faired well without Kawhi Leonard in the playoffs last season. In 2022, it’s been a different story. Even with Paul George putting up MVP-caliber numbers, the offense was in the bottom ten of the league.

Role players like Reggie Jackson and Marcus Morris, stars of that playoff run last year, are struggling mightily. With Paul George on the floor, the Clippers were a decent offense. Without him, they stood no chance.

Notice how I said the Clippers were a decent offense with PG-13 on the floor. I said this because this happened a week ago;

Now the Clippers really don’t stand a chance. Their elite defense has held them up all season, but the offense will have to come from somewhere over the coming weeks. They need more from Jackson, Morris, Bledsoe, Kennard, and Mann if they want to stay in the thick of things in the West.

Without Paul George, things might get ugly. Let’s see if the Clippers can tap into some of that resilient magic they had last year.

Los Angeles Lakers

Any Form of Consistency

The Lakers have been a model of inconsistency this season. Whether it be the production of their role players or the health of their stars, nothing has been certain about the 2022 Lakers. Even after they beat the crap out of my Blazers last night (we don’t talk about it), we’ve still yet to see them look like contenders.

Lebron James is the only reason this team isn’t near the bottom of the standings. Two days removed from being 37, James is tearing through the league as if this were 2013. He’s on a mission, carrying a Lakers team still trying to find their groove.

I’ve talked about the Lakers in-depth a lot this season. I’ve talked about how to fix their lineups, their shooting problems, and how to work around Russell Westbrook. Most of the things said in those segments haven’t come to fruition yet, so I have a new tactic I want to try with the Lakers.

The power of memes and Office Space is undefeated. If the Lakers don’t start winning, then Milton will burn down the Crypt arena. Wait. That might be a good thing.

Memphis Grizzlies

Continue The Great Defensive Play

I have reversed jinxed the Grizzlies. During my Week 10 power rankings posted last year (still weird to say that), I questioned whether the Grizzlies could play good defense with Ja Morant. Memphis’ defense was great when Morant was injured, but could they continue that with him on the floor?

Morant has returned for the last 6 six games, where the Grizzlies are 4-2. In that span, they have a 107.1 defensive rating, good for 6th in the NBA.

The Grizzlies have forced 15.2 turnovers in the last six games, which is a big reason for their success. At the start of the season, Morant was one of the reasons the defense was struggling. Now, the elite Memphis defenders around him are making up for his shortcomings.

After a terrible start to the year, the Grizzlie defense is back to its usual ways. It’s time to carry this throughout the season, hopefully leading to more success in the playoffs. Memphis is currently a cut above most of the other Western Conference teams below them. If they want that trend to continue, tough defense is the answer.

Miami Heat

More Depth

Before by resolution, I have to give Miami credit. I’ve questioned their questionable depth all season long. With major injuries to their stars, I thought Miami would fall apart. Bam Adebayo remains out, but the Heat have been a-ok. With that being said, the depth is still a problem.

The bench doesn’t really have a lot of versatility. It’s Tyler Herro and everybody else. That doesn’t scare me if I’m opposing teams. Shutting down Herro would be my main priority. I can live with any of the other guys beating me.

To no one’s surprise, adding Mario Chalmers won’t change much. If the Heat want to become a threat in the East, able to go against the Bucks & Nets, more depth is needed. Get it done, Pat.

Milwaukee Bucks

A More Clear Center Rotation

The Bucks have been unbeatable when healthy. When healthy, not many teams have been as dominant. If I have one problem with the Bucks, it’s their center rotation.

Brook Lopez is a controversial player, at times the root of Milwaukee’s problems, but he’s still good. He hasn’t played since opening day, dealing with back problems. In that time, Bobby Portis has stepped up big time. After Portis, I can’t say I love the options.

DeMarcus Cousins has made a return to a contending team, again. He hasn’t been half bad, but we all know he can’t be trusted when the Bucks need him the most. With an unclear timetable for Lopez’s return, the Bucks could use a backup center. Here are their options;

  1. Trade for a center –

That’s about it. Giannis has played half his minutes at center this season, so the Bucks are already trying out guys to fill the minutes down low. This isn’t a huge problem right now, but solving it before the playoffs would be great.

Minnesota Timberwolves

Finding An Identity

The Minnesota Timberwolves are weird. After a strong start, the wheels are falling off. Despite having more than enough talent to be decent, things aren’t falling into place. My dark horse in the Western Conference is slowly dying. Finding an identity is the way to save them.

Offensively, I don’t know why they’re 20th in the NBA. With Towns, Edwards, D-Lo, and Malik Beasley, you’d think they’d be covered on that end. But I have problems with the offense;

  • Towns doesn’t get the ball enough / doesn’t pass out of double-teams well when he does get the ball
  • Anthony Edwards needs to drive to the basket more
  • D’Angelo Russell needs to remember how to shoot
  • Same with Malik Beasley

Minnesota is one of the least efficient offenses in the NBA. They are a streaky team, which isn’t a recipe for success. On offense, they need better production from their main guys. They also need better decisions from some of their main guys.

Now onto the defense, which is also weird. In November, the T-Wolves were a top-10 defense in the NBA. In December, they were 21st. How?

They have good defenders. Beverley, Vanderbilt, McDaniels, and Okogie are all elite defenders. The defense has shown itself at times, but the Timberwolves have struggled with consistency on that end, too.

Finding an identity is key to the success of this team. Picking one side of the ball to focus on is vital to their success. Will they be a defensive team or an offensive team? That is the question they will have to figure out to make the playoffs.

New Orleans Pelicans

Keep Doing What You’re Doing

I talked about the Pelicans a few days ago. I sought out what they’d been doing right to find their recent success. I’ll just summarize that;

  • Keep defense tough defense / lots of length
  • Feed Ingram / get Josh Hart in transition / Jonas Valanciunas is a monster
  • Give Zion a treadmill

That’s about it. Sticking to that plan will lead to more success for New Orleans.

New York Knicks

Fix The Starting Lineup

Fix whatever this is. I don’t know how to explain the Knicks’ starters & bench dynamic, but they have to fix it. RJ Barrett, Julius Randle, and Evan Fournier have to play better. The bench has to continue to save this team.

Oklahoma City Thunder

Keep Developing Everybody

The Thunder are young, bad, and sticking to the plan. All this losing will (eventually) lead to a good team down the line. Sam Presti has a lot of time to figure out what to do with all those draft picks.

OKC already has good pieces for the future. From SGA to Giddey, there’s a lot to be excited about going forward. The most important thing for this rebuild is that the young guys keep playing and that everybody remains patient.

Orlando Magic

Keep Feeding Franz Wagner

Cole Anthony is good and all, but Franz Wagner is blossoming. With Orlando injured to hell and back, Wagner is their main option on offense. He didn’t have the ball to start the season, but now he does. The results are following swiftly after him.

Wagner is averaging 13.6 field-goal attempts since November. In December, he averaged 15.3 shot attempts per game. He also averaged 20 points on 47% shooting in December.

More Franz = more good results = more fun for me

Philadelphia 76ers

Figure Out What To Do With Ben Simmons

The 76ers have been ok without Ben Simmons. They clearly miss his defense, something that we all expected given how good Simmons is on that end. But the offense has also been sluggish at times. While there’s more spacing, losing Simmons, at least in the regular season, hurts.

Simmons averaged 16 points per game during the regular season. The playoffs are still Simmons’ kryptonite, but Philly could use that kick on offense. Trade talks are dead, so I don’t know what’s going to happen down the road. This saga has gone on way too long.

I again implore Daryl Morey to trade Simmons, but that probably won’t happen. Since Simmons is getting fined so much, he might come back to the team.

No matter what happens, the 76ers need to take a stand on what they’re doing with Simmons. Either trade him or slowly work him back into playing form in time for the playoffs. I prefer the former, but we’ll see what they do.

Phoenix Suns

Pay Deandre Ayton

Ayton is good. Money is deserved. Pretty simple logic right here. ‘

Portland Trail Blazers

Start From Scratch

I’m done with this pathetic franchise. It’s sorry to watch this team trot out there every night. The Lakers destroyed us last night, again showing us we’re not in the same class as other teams in the conference. We were 2-11 in December, one of the worst months of Blazers basketball I’ve ever seen.

The whole team is out of energy. Nassir Little is seemingly the only one who gives a damn most nights. The defense still sucks. Chauncey Billups hasn’t moved the needle at all. Dame is struggling. CJ is hurt. And we have no future.

Just trade everyone already.

Sacramento Kings

Figure Out The Backcourt Situation

The Sacramento Kings aren’t good. Every two weeks, it seems like Alvin Gentry is talking about how bad this team is. And you can’t blame him. With their poor defense and roster construction, it’s hard to watch the Kings. But there’s one thing that frustrates me more than anything;

WHAT THE HELL IS THE BACKCOURT

Tyrese Haliburton and De’Aaron Fox were such a good combo last season. In the year of our lord 2022, everything has changed. Haliburton is no longer an off-ball player. When Fox was out with Covid, Haliburton got the ball more. He was scoring off the dribble, controlling the offense, and looking great.

De’Aaron Fox has lost his touch from last season. After being an All-Star level player in 2021, things have fallen off the rails. Fox isn’t a player who can play off-ball. With his lack of a jump shot, there’s no way he can work off-ball.

That’s why this backcourt situation is so weird. Giving Haliburton the ball has given the Kings great success on offense. De’Aaron Fox has been awful this season, but he can’t play off the ball. So what do the Kings do?

I know this sounds crazy, but I would trade Fox. Haliburton is a more complete player, someone I trust more than Fox. Fox has had one All-Star level season in the NBA, but he’s been wildly inconsistent other than that. Fox’s trade value would still be immense despite his poor 2022.

He’s young, on a max contract, and a team looking for a franchise guard could use him. The Knicks, 76ers, and even the Pacers could use someone like Fox.

This backcourt situation is funky, but we’ll see what comes out of it in the comings seasons.

San Antonio Spurs

Commit To Tanking

Why are the Spurs the 10th seed? Have they learned nothing? You would think losing DeMar DeRozan would be a good time to rebuild, right?

The Spurs can’t become good if they keep picking in the late lottery. Under Gregg Popovich, I doubt they’re ever going to tank, which is unfortunate. This team will continue to run in circles until they get a top-5 pick in a draft. They need their Tim Duncan. They need a franchise cornerstone, not a role player.

TANK! PLEASE!

Toronto Raptors

Figure Out A Direction

The Raptors are beyond me. They have a pretty good roster on paper. Nick Nurse is the best coach in the NBA. With all of that, they’re still two games under 0.500.

With Siakam, Barnes, VanVleet, Anunoby, and Trent, this team should be a play-in contender. They still are, but I find it hard to believe they’ll make it there by the end of the season.

With the pieces they have, they should be better. With that in mind, what direction should Toronto take? They have pieces to make a big trade for a superstar. They also have great young pieces for the future.

I can’t tell you what the Raptors should do because I don’t know. It’s a weird situation that hopefully gets solved in the coming seasons. I have one simple request for Toronto throughout all of this;

Don’t Waste Scottie Barnes. Don’t Do It

Utah Jazz

Get Perimeter Defenders

This is the only thing holding the Jazz back from being title contenders. Other than that, they might be the best team in basketball.

Washington Wizards

Stop Fooling Yourselves

After a 10-3 start that saw their GM get extended and everybody get excited, the Wizards have been horrible. Who knew that only winning close games wasn’t a recipe for success? The once elite defense is gone, with the smorgasbord roster struggling to gel.

The Wizards are ruining their chances to develop youngsters like Avdija, Gafford, Aaron Holiday, and Corey Kispert. I get that the veterans are decent, but they serve no purpose in the long run.

Holding onto Bradley Beal also doesn’t make sense, since the Wizards have never been that good with him. This whole situation is Washington desperately grasping at straws that aren’t there. They’re trying to win without the roster to do so.

In the act of fooling themselves, they are diminishing future chances to build a contender. Such is the life of Washington basketball.
