How Good Can KD & Kyrie Be Next Season?

Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving teamed up during the 2019 offseason, forming one of the most talented offensive duos in the league. But KD missed all of last season with injury and Kyrie spent a great deal of time injured as well. The 2020-21 season is the first time we’ll get to see this duo play together. So how good can they really be?

Kevin Durant is a top-3 player in the world when healthy, and one of the most unique players to ever play the game. He is very tall and lanky, nearly 7 feet tall. But he can shoot from anywhere and is one of the craftiest scorers in recent memory. Durant is also a great defender, and was a key piece to the Warriors dynasty winning 2 rings in 2017 and 2018.

Kyrie Irving is also one of the most talented offensive guards in the league. He has the best handles in the league, arguably of all-time. Irving is a certified bucket-getter, helping Lebron James get a title with Cleveland in 2016. Irving hasn’t found the same kind of success without Lebron since he left, and now with a chance to play with KD he has a chance to prove all the doubters wrong.

These two are obviously very talented, but how good can they be together? I think that the answer to this questions lies with KD. Durant tore his Achilles during the 2019 NBA Finals, enduring one of the worst injuries in sports. Every single basketball player that has gotten this injury has never been the same, with the only player returning to his past self being Dominique Wilkins. We will have to wait and see how good Durant is when he returns, so the duo could be what we expect, or a lot worse.

And for me personally, the only way this duo works is it Durant is 100% of damn near close. Kyrie Irving is not fit to be the #1 option on a team, as we have seen since he left Cleveland in 2018. Irving is a bit of a diva and needs to be the #2 option. If not, I don’t think this duo will be as good as they are on paper.

And we don’t know how this chemistry will work. Kyrie isn’t the greatest person in the world to help a locker room, and neither is Durant. These two have never played together and it will likely take them a while to get adjusted to one another. Steve Nash will have a tough job in trying to mesh these two offensive power-houses together.

So to answer the original question, how good can these two be? Well there are a lot of question marks about their chemistry and Durant’s health, so we don’t know a lot. I don’t expect this duo to be as good as everybody thinks it will be, but they will still be a contender in the East. But we will have to wait and see if this duo is really all that.
