Ja Morant: Next Great PG?
Ja Morant, a star sophomore point guard from Murray State took the national stage and got a lot of attention when he had a triple-double in the Round of 64 against #5 Marquette. Although they lost in the Round of 32, Ja Morant had 28 points. Ja Morant had a sparkling season in which he averaged 24.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, 10 assists, shooting 49.9% from the field and 36.3% from 3. Those were great numbers and Morant is projected to be a top 3 pick in this year’s draft.
According to NBADraft.net, Morant is going 2nd to the Phoenix Suns. This would be a great pick for the Suns as they have their SG in Devin Booker and C in Deandre Ayton. It would be another piece in the puzzle for the Suns as they try to make the playoffs. If Ja Morant falls to 3, then he would go to Cleveland according to NBADraft.net. This wouldn’t be the best fit because the Cavaliers already have a young point guard in Collin Sexton, so Morant would not be that useful. If he falls to 4 and Chicago, this would be another good fit for Morant because they don’t have a point guard, but they have a shooting guard in Zach Lavine and power forward Lauri Markkanen. They also have a young center in Wendell Carter Jr.
Morant has a great array of skills. His athleticism, size, quickness, ball handling, passing are just some of the many qualities that Morant has. A couple of things he needs to improve on are his 3 point shooting (shooting in general) and turnovers while trying to force passes through. He is 6’3’’ and he has really long arms. His draft comparisons have been to point guard De’Aaron Fox of the Sacramento Kings and his passing abilities have been compared to players like Jason Kidd, perhaps one of the best passers in NBA history.
Players like Damian Lillard or CJ McCollum never went to colleges like Duke or UNC of Gonzaga, they went to small colleges like Weber State and Lehigh. This fits the model of Morant. He went to a small school, but he has so much talent. Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum are great players to have comparisons to.
So all in all, Ja Morant could be the next star out of a small school, and he has all the potential in the world to make this happen.
