Most Disappointing Players From The 2019-20 Season
Today I will be naming the most disappointing players from the 2019-20 regular season.
I know, I’m creative. Yesterday I broke down some of the players who broke out during the 2019-20 season. Now we are doing the opposite by finding some of the players who have disappointed us the most this season. Some of these players were great last year and were poised for great things this season. Others you just hoped would do well.
Marvin Bagley III – Sacramento Kings
When the Kings selected Bagley with the #2 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, many expected Bagley to be a cornerstone along with De’Aaron Fox in the Kings rebuild. And it looked like Bagley was the right pick. In his rookie season, Bagley averaged 14.9 points and 7.6 rebounds while shooting 50.4% from the field. So a young rookie with a great rookie season? The sophomore season for said player was destined to be great. Or not.
Bagley was sidelined for most of the season with injury. He has only played in 13 games this season, in which he averaged 14.2 points and 7.5 rebounds. While these two stat lines are eerily similar, his shooting percentage went down. He went from 50.4% to 46.7%.
The only thing that Bagley has going for him is that he is only 21 years old, and he can hope that all of his injuries is some sort of fluke. But with his miserable year, some Kings fans could be left wondering about one man. Luka Doncic. Great job Sacramento.
Mike Conley – Utah Jazz
After the Jazz acquired Mike Conley from the Grizzlies, the Jazz looked to be contenders with their new PG. Conley was coming off one of the best seasons of his career in which he averaged 21.1 points and 6.4 assists. The 21.1 points were a career high for Conley at the age of 31. So he was still capable of doing great things.
And yet when he came to the Jazz, something just didn’t work out. Conley was not that floor general that Ricky Rubio was and struggled to score at times. Conley was far better of the bench and the Jazz were better as a team in a lineup where Mitchell was the primary ball-handler.
This season Conley is averaging 13.8 points while shooting 40.5% from the field which is a 3% drop off from last season. The Jazz have stated that Conley is part of their long-term plan, but as he gets older, the Jazz might have failed with the Conley experiment.
Lauri Markkanen – Chicago Bulls
Lauri Markkanen was the 7th pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. Markkanen was a stretch big-guy and he has a bright future in the NBA saying that he could shoot the ball well. His rookie season was solid, but his second season was better. While he played just 51 games, Markkanen averaged 18.7 points and 9.0 rebounds. He also shot 36% from 3. So while Markkanen was injury prone, he showed that he had some promise as a stretch big.
But this season Markkanen has been unable to grow as we expected him too. His season was again riddled by injuries as he played in just 50 games this season. He is averaging 14.7 points and 6.3 rebounds while shooting 34% from 3. So Markkanen took a step back this season, but until the Bulls get a new coach in place of Jim Boylen, then the young talent on the Bulls could start to grow and get better. Until then, it’s mediocrity for Chicago.
