It’s Day 32 of the NBA Playoffs and we have Game 4 of the ECF between the Celtics and the Heat.

Boston Celtics

The Celtics lost Game 4 against the Heat. Here is what I thought about their performance.

After winning Game 3, the Celtics got some life in their series. With Gordon Hayward back, the Celtics looked looked to tie the series at 2-2 with a Game 4 win. But it would be another battle with the Heat. And it was. The 1st half was a defensive showcase as both teams struggled to shoot. Jayson Tatum was held scoreless in the first half and the Celtics trailed by 6. But Boston wasn’t done. Jayson Tatum had 16 points in the 3rd quarter and the Celtics got back into the game. The Celtics took a 85-84 lead with 8:51 left. They had all the momentum. But Tyler Herro and co. hit some big shots and Miami led 98-90 with 4:09 left. The Celtics continued to fight, but they trailed by 9 with under a minute left. But the Celtics have the Heat some problems. Jaylen Brown hit a 3 with 16.0 seconds left to cut the lead to 3, 107-104. Kemba Walker got fouled on a 3 and the Celtics trailed 109-107 with 9.2 seconds left. But Jimmy Butler hit 3/4 free throws down the stretch and Miami held on to win 112-109. Boston trails 3-1 in the series against Miami.

Offensively the Celtics were good as they shot 48% from the field and 35% from 3. Boston was also 17/21 from the free throw line. Boston had 12 offensive rebounds. Boston turned it over 19 times. The Celtics also had 38 points down low.

Defensively the Celtics were ok as they shot 43% from the field and 28% from 3. Miami was also 24/27 from the free throw line. Boston allowed 10 offensive rebounds. Boston forced just 8 turnovers. The Celtics also allowed 38 points in the paint.

Jayson Tatum had 28 points (all in 2nd half) and 9 rebounds. Jaylen Brown had 21 points and 9 rebounds. Kemba Walker added 20 points and 5 assists. Gordon Hayward had 14 points and 7 rebounds off the bench. Marcus Smart had 10 points and 11 assists as well.

Conclusion

The Celtics had their opportunities to win this game, even though they played pretty horrible at times. The first half was ugly as Jayson Tatum struggled mightily. The Celtics still only trailed by 6 with Tatum struggling. Tatum turned it on and the Celtics started to hit more shots. But when they needed stops, they couldn’t get them. Tyler Herro killed them and the Celtics blew their chance to tie the series. 19 turnovers and your All-Star going scoreless in the first half isn’t a recipe for success. The Celtics are certainly capable of coming back from down 3-1, but they will need to play much better in order to comeback and beat a very good Miami team.

Miami Heat

The Heat won Game 4 against the Heat. Here is what I thought about their performance.

The Heat lost Game 3 because they came out with no energy. Dragic and Butler struggled and the Heat played their worst basketball of the playoffs so far. And they needed a Game 4 to regain their confidence and essentially end the series. But it would be a battle. The Heat’s defense held Jayson Tatum scoreless in the first half, and Tyler Herro was scoring at will. The Heat took a 6-point lead into halftime. But Jayson Tatum woke up and so did the Celtics. The Celtics took a 85-84 lead in the 4th with 8:51 left. But the Heat recovered. With 4:09 remaining, Tyler Herro gave the Heat a 98-90 lead. The Heat led by 9 with under a minute left. The game was over, but it wasn’t. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown hit 3’s and the lead was just 3 with 16.0 seconds left. The Heat lead was just 2 with 9.2 seconds left. But Jimmy Butler hit 3/4 free throws and the Heat hung on to win 112-109. Miami leads 3-1 in the series.

Offensively the Heat were solid as they shot 43% from the field and 28% from 3. Miami was also 24/27 from the free throw line. Miami also had 10 offensive rebounds. The Heat turned it over just 8 times. The Heat also had 38 points down low.

Defensively the Heat were poor as Boston shot 48% from the field and 35% from 3. The Celtics were also 17/21 from the free throw line. Miami allowed 12 offensive rebounds. The Heat forced 19 turnovers. The Heat allowed 38 points in the paint.

Tyler Herro had 37 points and 6 rebounds off the bench. Jimmy Butler had 24 points and 9 rebounds. Goran Dragic added 22 points and 5 rebounds. Bam Adebayo had 20 points and 12 rebounds as well.

Conclusion

The Heat needed this win, and they got it. Their defense was superb on Jayson Tatum and the Celtics in the first half. Tyler Herro was spectacular throughout this game and hit some big shots. The Heat forced a lot of turnovers and it really benefited them. The Heat now lead 3-1 in this series and are now just 1 game away from the NBA Finals. All they have to do is stick to their gameplan and they will be just fine.
