It’s Day 34 of the NBA Playoffs and we have Game 5 of the ECF between the Heat and the Celtics.

Miami Heat

The Heat lost Game 5 against the Celtics. Here is what I thought about their performance.

After taking a 3-1 series lead, the Heat looked to dispose of the Celtics and advance to the Finals. Obviously it wouldn’t be easy, but the Heat had found the secret sauce to beat the Celtics. And they looked great in the first half. They dominated the first quarter as Boston shot 25% from the field in the 1st quarter. Duncan Robinson had 17 points in the first half and the Heat led by 7 at halftime. And then the Heat lost control. The Heat’s defense lost all energy and gave up a 20-6 run to start the 3rd and they allowed 41 points in total in the 3rd. The Heat never came back and they lost 121-108. The Heat lead 3-2 in the series.

Offensively the Heat were ok as they shot 45% from the field and 19% from 3. Miami was also 23/29 from the free throw line. The Heat had 12 turnovers. Miami also had 50 points in the paint.

Defensively the Heat were poor as Boston shot 45% from the field and 32% from 3. Boston was also 25/29 from the free throw line. Miami allowed 13 offensive rebounds. Miami forced just 11 turnovers. Miami also allowed 52 points in the paint.

Goran Dragic had 23 points. Duncan Robinson had 20 points. Jimmy Butler had 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists. Jae Crowder added 14 points and 6 rebounds. Tyler Herro had 14 points off the bench. Bam Adebayo added 13 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists.

Conclusion

The Heat lost their focus for the first time this playoffs. That first have was great as their defense held the Celtics down. Robinson and Butler had 31 points in the first half. The Heat had the game in hand. But then they collapsed. They started to dream about the finals and they lost focus. They allowed 41 points in the 3rd and they completely blew their chance to win this game. Robinson and Butler had just 6 points in the 2nd half and Bam Adebayo had just 13 points, maybe repercussions of his hand injury. Now the Heat have to re-collect and try and win Game 6, otherwise they will be cutting it a bit close.

Boston Celtics

The Celtics won Game 5 against the Heat. Here is what I thought about their performance.

After falling behind, the Celtics had their backs against the wall. All their losses in this series were close, and they could have won every game in this series. But now they needed a win to keep their season alive. But it didn’t start well for the Celtics. They shot 25% from the field in the 1st quarter and trailed by 7 at halftime. But then they responded, and in a big way. Boston started the 3rd on a 20-6 run and they scored 41 points overall in the 3rd quarter. The Celtics cruised to a 121-108 victory to take Game 5, and they now trail 3-2 in this series.

Offensively the Celtics were great as they shot 45% from the field and 32% from 3. Boston was also 25/29 from the free throw line. The Celtics had 13 offensive rebounds. The Celtics had just 11 turnovers. Boston also had 52 points down low.

Defensively the Celtics were sub-par as Miami shot 45% from the field and 19% from 3. Miami was also 23/29 from the free throw line. The Celtics forced 12 turnovers. The Celtics also allowed 50 points in the paint.

Jayson Tatum had 31 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists. Jaylen Brown had28 points and 8 rebounds. Daniel Theis added15 points and 13 rebounds. Kemba Walker had 15 points and 7 assists as well. Marcus Smart had 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists. Gordon Hayward had 10 points off the bench.

Conclusion

The Celtics did what they needed to do. Their first half was ugly, but they didn’t let it completely slip away. And that 3rd quarter was something else. Everybody got in on the action as Boston’s offense seemed unbeatable. Tatum and Brown were great and they got great help. The C’s defense was also great as Miami only hit 7 3’s. Now the Celtics have some momentum and they trail 3-2 in the series.
