Should Devin Booker Leave The Suns?

Devin Booker is one of the best offensive players in the league, turning himself into one of the smoothest players in the league. But the Suns haven’t made the playoffs with Booker, and the last time they were in the postseason was 2010. Booker can lead the Suns to promise, but if not, should he leave?

For years the Suns have been in the depths of the West. Since Steve Nash left the franchise, the desert has been pretty barren. It’s almost like the Suns are trying to ruin their franchise. From drafting Josh Jackson, Dragon Bender, and Marquise Chriss as well as making Igor Kokoskov their head coach last season, the Suns aren’t the brightest franchise.

But the Suns played very well in 2020 as they seemed to have finally built a solid team around Booker. They have a veteran PG in Ricky Rubio, Booker, Kelly Oubre Jr, Rookie Cameron Johnson, and Deandre Ayton down low. They have Mikal Bridges, Dario Saric, Aaron Baynes, and Cameron Payne off the bench. Booker is finally playing with a competent head coach in Monty Williams and the Suns now seem like a decent team in the West.

Booker has proven himself in the league and there is doubting his talent anymore. But now it becomes a matter of team success, and the Suns will likely be getting more of that in the future. But I don’t think that the Booker should stay with the Suns to easily.

Obviously we can’t predict the future but lets say the Suns make the playoffs a couple of times before 2024 (when Booker becomes an UFA). Is that enough for him? Booker is just 23 years old right now and will be 27 by the time he is a free agent in 2024. So will a few playoff appearances be satisfying for Booker? Probably not.

So Booker will have to think long and hard about if he wants to leave. The Suns have a good team around him and have the 10th pick in the draft this year, a chance to add another good role player that will help them. The Suns will be getting back to the playoffs soon, but again, it that enough for Booker?

So as of right now I’m not saying Booker should do one or the other. On the one hand the Suns are an ascending team in the West and seem to be heading in the right direction. On the other hand they will likely not win a title before 2024, when Booker is a free agent. Booker is only 23 and will be 27 by the time he is a UFA. So Booker could leave depending on how much or how little success that the Suns get in that time period. So we’ll just have to wait and see if Devin Booker leaves the Suns, or stays with them for a long time.
