Should Giannis Leave The Bucks?

Giannis Antetokounmpo has built an impressive resume with the Bucks, but that hasn’t translated to success in the post-season. Giannis is a possible free agent during the summer of 2021, and there are rumors that he could be leaving. So should Giannis leave Milwaukee?

Giannis has found a lot of success with Milwaukee. He is a 2x MVP and DPOY and has given the Bucks their best basketball since the early 2000s. The Bucks have been good, but not good enough to win a title. How can they fix that and make Giannis stay for a long time in Milwaukee?

For starters they need to fix their roster. This roster is filled with shooters, which in theory should help Giannis, but it doesn’t. While the Bucks need floor spacers to help a limited floor spacer in Giannis, they just stand around. They need for guys who can create off the dribble so that Giannis is allowed to attack and when he gives it up, it’s not a catch and shoot 3.

But even with no shot-creators, they need a good offensive system. The Bucks just stand around and watch Giannis, which allows teams like the 2019 Raptors and the 2020 Heat to form a gameplan to stop Giannis and force everybody else to beat them. All they need is for the most overrated coach in the league, Mike Budenholzer, to make an adjustment to their very simple offense and make it so that the Bucks can actually succeed in the playoffs when defenses get better and expose weaknesses.

The Bucks have some options going forward. Some players like Chris Paul are available, and the Bucks desperately need somebody like Paul. But of course, this is all unlikely to happen and here is why.

Mike Budenholzer wasn’t even fired for the disastrous 2020 Bubble, in which the Bucks were horrible. He got outcoached by Erik Spoelstra, and made no adjustments to help Giannis or his team succeed. And he kept his job heading into next season. And the Bucks haven’t been rumored to make any moves this offseason, so the flawed team and system will likely stay intact.

So that means that the Bucks will struggle when they face a team with the right personnel to stop them. Teams like the Heat and the Lakers are well tooled to defeat a Giannis-led team. And with the Bucks having to no other shot-creators (Khris Middleton isn’t good at it), they will go back to same bad system again. This means 50-60 wins and a top seed in the East. Probably another MVP for Giannis and a disappointing playoff exit, meaning that the cycle repeats.

But I do think that Giannis should at least consider leaving at this moment. The Bucks have set him up for failure for the past two seasons and it looks like the pattern will repeat in 2021. Unless the Bucks make some drastic changes to their roster and system and are able to get a title in 2021, I think that Giannis should leave. Teams like the Warriors, Mavericks, and Heat have all been rumored to be after the 2x MVP, and all of those teams are better managed than the Bucks. So Giannis should leave the sinking ship that is Milwaukee before he wastes his career.
