Teams That Should Be Rebuilding
A lot of teams in the NBA are in different modes. From the contenders like the LA Lakers to the depths of the league like the Cleveland Cavaliers. But some teams don’t know what they are doing at all. So today, I’m giving some teams that should be rebuilding some advice.
Oklahoma City Thunder
Although the Thunder made the playoffs last season and they were a very surprising team last season, I think that they should look to rebuild. The Thunder season ended bitterly, and I don’t think that the core that they have will be well suited for the future.
For starters, Chris Paul likely won’t be with the franchise for much longer. He has a massive contract and there have been rumors that he will be getting traded. I think that the Thunder should try and trade Paul for even more draft picks, if it’s even possible at this point for the Thunder to have more draft picks. I think that they should just go full rebuild because they have the assets to do it.
Danillo Gallinari likely won’t be back with the team after making comments that he wanted to play for a title. Gallinari struggled in the playoffs and if he had played better the Thunder could have won the series. I don’t think that the Thunder should look to pursue Gallinari or anybody great in free agency and just rebuild.
You have SGA, Lu Dort, Darius Bazley, and Steven Adams. The Thunder have the 25th pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, and many more draft picks for their future. I don’t think that the Thunder should try and win, they have everything they need for a rebuild and they should just start now.
Philadelphia 76ers
The 76ers have been a consistent playoff team, but they have consistently disappointed. Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons are both very talented and they have proven that they can work well together. But the duo has gotten progressively worse over the years, with Simmons inability to work on a jumpshot and Embiid’s lack of worth ethic at times has been a problem in the city of brotherly love.
The 76ers management has also made some bad decisions as they paid Al Horford and Tobias Harris max contracts and they can’t seem to make the right roster to compete in the East. They have gone through a lot of players, Brett Brown was fired and even still I’m not convinced that they will be a championship contender.
I think that the 76ers should pick between Embiid and Simmons and try and trade the other. Me personally I would choose Embiid for now because Simmons won’t shoot jumpshots, even if it hurts his team. Although Embiid is also flawed with his injuries and work-ethic, I would still choose him. You trade Simmons for some shooting and high draft picks and then you start rebuilding. Not tanking again, but rebuild.
For Embiid you need a good pick and roll point guard and lots of shooting. Some perimeter defense would also be good to help Embiid. I think that making a roster around Embiid is much easier than building around Simmons, and I think that is the way that they should be going.
Nothing the 76ers do is working, so them trying to win obviously isn’t working. They don’t know how to utilize Simmons and Embiid, and they pay the wrong people. They aren’t great at drafting, and it’s clear that the Process isn’t the right way to go about things. So I think that the 76ers maybe go one more year with Doc Rivers and then see where things go. But most likely I see this team getting blown up and starting from scratch.
New York Knicks
The Knicks, are well, the Knicks. They had dreams of KD, Kyrie, and Zion entering the 2020 season, and instead got 4 power forwards. To say it best, this team is a mess. And while they are already rebuilding, here’s some advice for the struggling Big Apple franchise.
The Knicks are going in the right direction. Instead of tanking for high draft picks, they should just focus on getting better. You would think that the Knicks would know this by now, but they don’t. They need to continue to play their young players and develop them. Tom Thibodeau is a good coach who can teach the young players to play hard.
The Knicks should look to try and improve slowly, instead of trying to hit a homerun every single free agency, because we know that that stuff will not happen. I think that the Knicks should just take their time and make their team better slowly but surely.
