What Should The Warriors Do With The #2 Overall Pick?

The Warriors went from a dynasty to the depths of the West as they didn’t have Curry or Thompson for most of the year. But with Curry, Wiggins, Thompson, and Draymond Green returning for the 2020-21 season, many believe that the Warriors can be very good. They also have a good asset with the #2 overall pick. What should the Warriors do with this pick?

The Warriors are poised for the postseason once again in 2021, so who they select with this pick is important. The 2020 NBA Draft doesn’t have much generational talent, so trading this pick likely won’t net the Warriors much of anything. Some people were throwing around guys like Ben Simmons or Joel Embiid, but I doubt that the Warriors would be able to pull that off. So, who should the Warriors select.

The Warriors obviously need a big-man to anchor the defense. Draymond Green is well past his 2016 prime, and while I think he will improve during the 2021 season, he’s not enough. Thompson is enough to blanket people on the perimeter, but adding a real shot-blocker down low would really help this team.

James Wiseman is the obvious choice, a big guy with some great defensive potential. But Wiseman didn’t get that much playing time in college, and while what we saw was impressive, it may not be enough to select Wiseman #2 overall. Wiseman averaged 19.7 points and 10.7 rebounds on 77% shooting in just 3 games with Memphis. He was very good, but he is a bit of a risk.

Lamelo Ball has apparently been bad during his team interviews and has been slipping in the draft. Ball needs the ball in his hands to be successful and with the best PG in the league already on your team, Ball isn’t that useful. Me personally I don’t know where the Ball to the Warriors rumored even started, because it never made any sense. I don’t see Ball as becoming a very good NBA player, but he could prove me wrong.

Deni Avdija is the big unknown in this draft, and I doubt that the Warriors would be stupid enough to select him this high. There have been rumors that the Warriors really like Avdija, for some reason. Avdija is supposedly the next Luka, which is highly unreasonable. Like Ball, I doubt that Avdija will result in much of anything in the NBA.

So I think that the Warriors don’t have a great answer on who to pick. While Wiseman is the guy who fits their needs, he didn’t play much in college and is relatively unexperienced. He might struggle in his rookie season before truly settling in. But I do think that the Warriors should select Wiseman, just to shore up the middle. Wiseman isn’t going to be relied on to be a scoring threat like he would be on a tanking team.

I mean, the Warriors should take Edwards if he is available, but unless the Timberwolves are absolutely stupid (a possibility), the Warriors should take Wiseman. Wiseman is a very risky pick, but I think that he could pan out very well and help this Warriors lineup get much better and make them contenders in the West. No need to think about this one too hard, just fill your lineup and hopefully stay healthy during the season and then the Warriors will be back near the top of the West.
