With the 2010s done and the 2020s just now starting, there will have to be a dominant player throughout the 2020s. From Jordan to Lebron James, there has always been a player that completely dominates a decade. But we haven’t found a true leader of the pack yet for the 2020s. Who will that leader be?

Over the past few seasons, we have gotten a lot more generational young talents entering the league. With Zion Williamson, Ja Morant, Luka Doncic, Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid, Trae Young, and Giannis, there are all sorts of great young talent in the league. But who will take that big step and dominate for most of the 2020s?

I think we can all agree on this one. It’s Luka Doncic and by a country mile. Doncic was the very unknown European kid taken by the Dallas Mavericks. Most people didn’t think that Luka would do very well in the NBA, and they were wrong. Luka won the Rookie of the Year in 2019 and we saw flashes of greatness.

The Mavs added another international star in Kristaps Porzingis, and the Mavs took massive strides in the 2019-20 season, mainly Doncic.
Doncic averaged 28.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 8.8 assists. Doncic shot 46% from the field and 32% from 3. The Mavs had the best offense in the league and one of the greatest offensives ever thanks to their franchise superstar.

Doncic isn’t your conventional player. He’s not athletic and slow by most means. But he is incredibly smart. He uses his slowness to his advantage as he surprises defenders with his change of pace and direction. Doncic is a great rebounder and passer for his position and is one of the best guards in the league today.

Doncic can be erratic at times and force things, but as he gets older I expect this to go down. Doncic isn’t the most efficient in the world, but again as he gets older this stuff will improve. Doncic had one of the best postseason debuts ever. He scored the most points ever in a playoff debut, had a buzzer beater and gave the Clippers a very tough 6 game series.
Doncic averaged 31 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 8.7 assists while shooting 50% from the field and 36% from 3. So Doncic got better in the playoffs against a very physical Clippers team.

I think that we can all agree Doncic is the best young player in the league. He is one of the most talented offensive players in the game, and the Mavericks are an ascending team in the West. Doncic will be a perennial All-Star and All-NBA member, and MVP’s will likely come. But the question is, how good can Luka be in the 2020s? We’ll just have to wait and see.
