Will Zion Williamson Be A Star?

Zion Williamson has been one of the most hyped players to enter the league since Lebron James. Zion is very talented, but his rookie season was a roller coaster. Williamson missed most of the season with a knee injury, and played just 19 games during the regular season. But he was great and the Pelicans were much better with him. But in the bubble, Williamson looked out of shape and the Pelicans struggled. So, can Zion Williamson really be a star?

In the weeks before the season was postponed due to Covid-19, Williamson was on top of the world. He was dominating, proving all of his doubters wrong as he was absolutely incredible in just a 19-game stretch. And then the season got cancelled, which turned out to be the worst case scenario for Williamson and the Pelicans.

And in the bubble Williamson looked very out of shape and the Pelicans struggled mightily, looking more like pretenders than what they were in March. And most of the reason was because of the poor play of Zion Williamson. So, can Zion be a star?

Zion is a very talented player no doubt, but his health will likely be the defining part of his career. Williamson needs to be much lighter, as his body most likely can’t take all the jumping and explosive dunks. Williamson is a good kid and his basketball knowledge is not something that people should be worried about. But his health is something that could seriously hurt him.

I look at Williamson like Charles Barkley. Barkley was good in the early parts of his career, but as he lost weight he became even better in Phoenix, where he won an MVP in 1993. Williamson weighs 284, which I think is a bit too much if he wants to have a long, successful career. I think somewhere around 240-250 is much better from Williamson.

But what I worry about with Zion is that if he continues to have injuries, he won’t develop as much as he should be. His natural physical ability will also be hindered. So I think that the #1 priority for the Pelicans should be getting Williamson fit and healthy for next season. The Pelicans can be a very good team, and without Williamson they aren’t as good. So I think that Williamson will become a star, as long as he loses some weight and is able to stay healthy, which isn’t always a given with a player. Lots of players have their careers plagues by injuries, and we sure don’t hope that happens with Williamson who has the chance to be a generational talent.
